Recently I get an error message when testing my words and phrases. After kindly explanation from tutor Jill, I know the cause of error message. Jill said that the error message is because sometimes I didn’t save the complete word. I have saved words that do not have sentences attached to them. For example, when I look at my ‘words I am learning ‘ list , I see that word ‘ academi’ with no sentence attached to it. The whole word is ‘academic’, therefore , when I try to test this word it causes a break in the system and I receive an error message. To avoid making this mistake I have to save the entire word.
Also, Jill mentioned that if I save phrases with strange characters, such as apostrophes, quotation marks etc., the test might not work properly. I should also avoid saving phrases that contain punctuation marks. If I save phrases with punctuation marks, the test might not work properly, either.
He advise me go to ‘words I am learning’ and ‘phrases I am learning’ and move all the words that do not have a sentence attached to them to ‘know’ . I follow her instructions and then test my words and phrases for few times. No error message appears again.
I have beening studying in The linguist system for 14 days and I became a formal member yesterday. I have being spending much time staying in the linguist and my favorite blogs of member in order to being familar with linguist. However, I don't seem to relize how the KNOW WORDS work in the review section. I want to test the vacabulary from the content I am reading at present instead of old one. However , the system can't allow me to do so , It appear all vacabulary I used to read. It seems like I have to test correctly in 7 times then the word will move up to KNOW WORDS. Mostly I would like to I test the words out of the content I read at present. Today I see the explains from tutor Mark on the Linguist so I understand clearly.
Mark explain HOW SAVED WORDS ARE MOVED TO KNOWN WORDS.
When you save a word our system assigns that word a status of New or 1. A known word has a status of Known or 7. There are two ways by which you can move a word from New to Known. You can test the word in the Review section and each time you test it correctly it will move up one level in the seven step progression to Known. Therefore, if you test it correctly seven times in a row it will become Known. Every time you test it incorrectly it will move back one level. The only other way to affect the seven step progression is if you meet the saved word in a new content item. If, while reading the new item, you do not save the word again, our system will move the word three steps in the progression to known. This is because you have encountered the word again and have understood it.
Finally, if you find you would just like to move a word to known for whatever reason, you can do so by selecting it in the Words I am Learning section and clicking the “Move to Known” button. The important thing to realize is that whether you move words to known slowly or quickly it doesn’t matter. If you move words to known and then you encounter the word again, you can always resave it and it will come out of your Known Words. You are probably not going to learn and remember all your new words but you will remember more and more of them and you will always be increasing your vocabulary.
