Recently I get an error message when testing my words and phrases. After kindly explanation from tutor Jill, I know the cause of error message. Jill said that the error message is because sometimes I didn’t save the complete word. I have saved words that do not have sentences attached to them. For example, when I look at my ‘words I am learning ‘ list , I see that word ‘ academi’ with no sentence attached to it. The whole word is ‘academic’, therefore , when I try to test this word it causes a break in the system and I receive an error message. To avoid making this mistake I have to save the entire word.
Also, Jill mentioned that if I save phrases with strange characters, such as apostrophes, quotation marks etc., the test might not work properly. I should also avoid saving phrases that contain punctuation marks. If I save phrases with punctuation marks, the test might not work properly, either.
He advise me go to ‘words I am learning’ and ‘phrases I am learning’ and move all the words that do not have a sentence attached to them to ‘know’ . I follow her instructions and then test my words and phrases for few times. No error message appears again.
Yesterday I had a pleasant discussion with tutor Julie, Marianne, Doris and Michael. I totally agree that Julie said there is no perfect job, every job will have some problems, every job will have it good parts. Nevertheless, we still need to look for a one that is closely to perfect. Actually I got a new job in the International Trade Company recently. I think I will improve English a lot through this new job. Good lucky to me ^_^
While Michael was talking about he usually picks up his daughter by a motorcycle to school in Taiwan. Then tutor Julie is surprised at that. However, I never know a foreigner like Julie will be shocked by that. Because It is very normal situation in Taiwan. Maybe it became a part of our culture. While Julie was talking about that much of and American work at home via internet. I also was surprise by that. Maybe it is also a part of culture for them and I really hope I can work in that way one day
Today I read the post in the Linguist Blog that talk about Switch words and hedges words in English. Steven and Jill discuss how to correctly use those switch words. They seem easy but it is very important to how to use correctly. If you use it in a proper way, your writing in English will be better.
I want to use those switch words what I learn today from the Linguist Blog to write down a simple paragraph below in order to be more familiar with them.
I have been thinking of changing present job for a long time. The reason to quit present job is not that my current salary is low. By contrast, the paid at the present job is good enough compared to others people who are same age as me in . Nevertheless, I still really want to quit this job. In my view what is a good job is that you can get good salary. What is more, I can see a foreseeable future in a job. However, a foreseeable future doesn’t appear to be my present position. Therefore, I decide to leave my present job recently. Moreover, I also got a new job. Although the salary of my new job is much less than previous one, I won’t regret to do so. Because I think I will achieve a lot at my new job. Furthermore, if I work very hard, my new boss will get me a raise soon.
I have beening studying in The linguist system for 14 days and I became a formal member yesterday. I have being spending much time staying in the linguist and my favorite blogs of member in order to being familar with linguist. However, I don't seem to relize how the KNOW WORDS work in the review section. I want to test the vacabulary from the content I am reading at present instead of old one. However , the system can't allow me to do so , It appear all vacabulary I used to read. It seems like I have to test correctly in 7 times then the word will move up to KNOW WORDS. Mostly I would like to I test the words out of the content I read at present. Today I see the explains from tutor Mark on the Linguist so I understand clearly.
Mark explain HOW SAVED WORDS ARE MOVED TO KNOWN WORDS.
When you save a word our system assigns that word a status of New or 1. A known word has a status of Known or 7. There are two ways by which you can move a word from New to Known. You can test the word in the Review section and each time you test it correctly it will move up one level in the seven step progression to Known. Therefore, if you test it correctly seven times in a row it will become Known. Every time you test it incorrectly it will move back one level. The only other way to affect the seven step progression is if you meet the saved word in a new content item. If, while reading the new item, you do not save the word again, our system will move the word three steps in the progression to known. This is because you have encountered the word again and have understood it.
Finally, if you find you would just like to move a word to known for whatever reason, you can do so by selecting it in the Words I am Learning section and clicking the “Move to Known” button. The important thing to realize is that whether you move words to known slowly or quickly it doesn’t matter. If you move words to known and then you encounter the word again, you can always resave it and it will come out of your Known Words. You are probably not going to learn and remember all your new words but you will remember more and more of them and you will always be increasing your vocabulary.
Reading easy articles is more important than reading Difficult articles.
My experience in Toeic is that I have to read quickly then I'll get much better scores in part 2 section called Reading. Actually ,The contents of Toeic test in reading section are not difficult for me. If I have enough time , I will do well. However , this is a examination , I think the goal of Toeic test want to test SPEED in reading rather than understanding the meaning of articles. They need is that you should have the abilities to read or listen like a native speaker. So Speed is really really important in Toeic test. If you can't improve your speed at Toeic , mabye you speak or read English like native CHILDREN.
I think I make a mistake in Reaing after reading steven's article about Reading is important. Before taking the Toeic test , my viewpoint in learning English is that If I can read difficult articles , I also fully understand diffiuclt articles. Mabye it is right viewpoint. However , mostly I spend much time reading and I don't fully understand the meaning of sentence. I still get some new words from those diffiult articles. I know the meaning of new word but not fully familiar with them. Because I din't make it a part of life , the words are not useful. The words from difficult articles also difficult words. I mean It is hard to make it a part of my life. Recently I try to focus on reading some words in articles I already know before but I am not familar with. I found If I can fully understand the meaning of words then I will confidence using them . Then also easy to have a conversation with people. It seems like the speed of reading also become more quickly.
